The Naomi V Jelish Archive and Gallery

Web projects to compliment conceptual artist Jamie Shovlin’s Naomi V Jelish project.Naomi V Jelish was a fictional schoolgirl created by Shovlin to explore interests around archiving, the representation of authenticity and curatorial authority. Shovlin, framing himself purely as a curator rather than creator, presented drawings and archival material depicting her tragic life alongside the notes and essays of archivist and interested party John Ivesmail.

The online component was designed to represent two slightly opposing frameworks within which the work could be viewed. The first, gallery.naomivjelish.org.uk, was simply to be an online gallery presenting the works held by Riflemaker as curated by Jamie Shovlin.

The second is that of a small organisation committed to the archiving and preservation of the young girls work presenting John Ivesmail’s notes and essays and linking the project to the wider  world. The site was designed to represent a ‘civic’ organisation with strict adherence to accessibility and hierarchical site/document structures and navigation. Several fake links were also created by using sub-domains that mimicked real websites (a technique used by phishing sites which try and get you enter sensitive passwords). This gave the impression Naomi V Jelish and here family were part of the real world (complete with unhelpful error 404 pages).
  • XHTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Site Design and Build
  • Flash based interactive Sketchbooks
  • ‘Fake’ pages and web links
  • Online gallery

The website was also featured in the exhibition ‘After the Fact’, Tuille House and touring.
Note: As some of the websites (particularly the ad-servers these sites originally used) used as source material for the ‘spoof’ pages have since changed significantly not everything works anymore. We had the opportunity to make updates but felt a naturally decaying object was a far more interesting document of this project.
